Sunday School at LUMC
The Children’s Sunday School Ministry at Leesburg United Methodist Church is dedicated to our church’s mission “To make disciples of Jesus Christ who will live transformed lives and influence their generation, and the next, with God’s love!”
On most Sundays during the year, you can find no less than 18 adults spread across 9 classrooms, sharing the word of the Lord and molding the lives of the youngest members of our congregation. These adults, or Sunday Discipleship Leaders do not merely teach content. They care, they model, they encourage. For an hour or so once a week, these persons help over 100 children ages 2-5th grade form into Christian disciples.
But Sunday school is more than class time. It is an opportunity to introduce various aspects of a worship service to the children as well. For the first 15 minutes of Sunday school, the elementary aged students are gathered for the “opening”. This includes collecting the offering, discussing prayers and praises, announcements and music.
Sunday school is also a time of fellowship. As the children spend more and more time together a special bond is developed that will follow them into Middle School beyond. At the conclusion of Sunday school, the children and parents are brought together to enjoy refreshments, coffee and each others company. It is an opportunity to hear about what was done in class that day, talk with teachers as necessary and see friends.
